Our Story

Backlode started as an idea when I was moving from Saint Louis to Ann Arbor for my medical training. Luckily, I stumbled upon a local company in Ann Arbor that was moving an incoming fellow to Saint Louis at the same time as my planned move. Because they would have otherwise been driving home an empty truck, they offered me a discount and saved me $1500.

Our goal is to recreate this for others. That’s why we formed Backlode.

Frequently Asked Questions

We don't. This is a free service that we haven't monetized in any way.

We use an email relay system to hide your email address from other users. All messages that you send will appear to other users as arriving from an @relay.backlode.com email address.

We recommend that you call locally owned companies as they are more likely to negotiate with you. Don't forget to look to call companies in both your origin and destination cities! Be sure to do your research on any company you are considering. Check out the US DOT's Protect My Move page for more information

We have only reached out to companies that we've worked with personally or who are certified as ProMovers by the American Moving & Storage Association.

The company name stems from the term “backload” which is used in Australia and New Zealand when customers book a moving truck during the the return trip back to its base. Moving companies in those countries offer discounted rates to customers willing to be flexible with their timing in return for not having to drive their truck home empty.
